The aircraft was under tow from the gate to a maintenance apron then the vehicle driver accidentaly backed the 747 tail first into the side of a hangar resulting in major damage to the upper tailfin and outer stabilizers. There were no injured persons. According to unconfirmed reports the 747 had undergone maintenance at Hong Kong and had accomplished a check flight (UAL 6866) in the morning. The 747 is expected remain grounded for a longer time.
NOTE: On 02.FEB 2002, the aircraft in question was involved in a taxi collision at Melbourne, Australia causing damage to its left wingtip.
